Grid Computing: Getting Beyond the Hype

Grid computing enables access to unprecedented resources and data, irrespective of the geographical locations and service rendered, with a better Quality of Service (QoS). Grid computing is similar to distributed computing except for its large scale computing power and large sharing capacity in a heterogeneous environment. The reasons for its popularity include global collaborations, improved infrastructure and servicing, and knowledge and resource sharing. This paper attempts to get past some of the hype surrounding grid computing and focuses on presenting an introduction to grid computing and the evolution of grid computing. It discusses ways to categorize grids and the need for grids. It also discusses the various applications that can take advantage of this paradigm.
